According to statistics, more than 50% of stroke survivors suffer from this problem; however, due to the complexity of their health condition, traditional diagnostic tests (such as polysomnography) are often inconvenient and expensive.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\">Researchers at the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) have developed a system that utilizes smartphone sensors and a portable pulse oximeter. The study was published in the journal <i data-path-to-node=\"3\" data-index-in-node=\"195\">IEEE Transactions on Neural Systems and Rehabilitation Engineering<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\">The new method allows for the recording of three types of signals throughout the night:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"5\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Acoustic:<\/b> Monitoring breathing sounds.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Movement:<\/b> Determining body position using smartphone sensors.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5,2,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"5,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Oxygenation:<\/b> Measuring blood oxygen saturation levels via a wireless device.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">Based on this data, scientists derive digital biomarkers that assist in the accurate diagnosis of apnea.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">The study involved 30 patients in the post-stroke rehabilitation phase and a control group of 30 individuals. The results are alarming:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"8\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"8,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">67% of stroke survivors<\/b> exhibited moderate to severe apnea.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"8,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Severe apnea<\/b> was recorded in 40% of these patients, compared to only 7% in the control group.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\">Professor Jan\u00e9 explains that after a stroke, patients often tend to breathe through their mouths and lie on their backs, which further increases the risk of airway obstruction.
