{"id":12220,"date":"2026-02-02T10:14:23","date_gmt":"2026-02-02T06:14:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medscriptum.org\/?p=12220"},"modified":"2026-02-02T10:14:25","modified_gmt":"2026-02-02T06:14:25","slug":"new-artificial-lung-system-a-revolutionary-method-that-saved-a-patient-awaiting-transplant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medscriptum.org\/en\/new-artificial-lung-system-a-revolutionary-method-that-saved-a-patient-awaiting-transplant\/","title":{"rendered":"New Artificial Lung System: A Revolutionary Method That Saved a Patient Awaiting Transplant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-path-to-node=\"1\"><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"1\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Surgeons at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine have performed a unique procedure.<\/b><span class=\"\"> Scientists completely removed a patient&#8217;s damaged lungs and kept the individual alive for 48 hours using an artificial lung system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"2\"><span class=\"\">The study,<\/span><span class=\"\"> published in the journal <\/span><i class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"2\" data-index-in-node=\"36\">Med<\/i><span class=\"\">,<\/span><span class=\"\"> confirms that this new artificial lung system can maintain a patient\u2019s stable condition until a donor organ becomes available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\"><span class=\"\">The 33-year-old patient suffered total lung failure due to a combination of the influenza virus and an antibiotic-resistant bacterial infection.<\/span><span class=\"\"> The infection spread to the bloodstream,<\/span><span class=\"\"> making an immediate transplant impossible.<\/span><span class=\"\"> Notably,<\/span><span class=\"\"> performing an organ transplant during an active infection would have resulted in the patient&#8217;s death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\"><span class=\"\">The scientists found a solution through an innovative approach.<\/span> <b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"4\" data-index-in-node=\"64\">Ankit Bharat<\/b><span class=\"\">,<\/span><span class=\"\"> Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Northwestern Medicine,<\/span><span class=\"\"> and his team developed a system of shunts,<\/span><span class=\"\"> tubes,<\/span><span class=\"\"> and pumps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\"><span class=\"\">This mechanism draws blood from the right side of the heart,<\/span><span class=\"\"> oxygenates it,<\/span><span class=\"\"> removes carbon dioxide,<\/span><span class=\"\"> and then redirects the blood directly to the left side of the heart,<\/span><span class=\"\"> allowing it to circulate throughout the entire body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\"><span class=\"\">Until now,<\/span><span class=\"\"> medicine has utilized <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"33\">Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)<\/b><span class=\"\">.<\/span><span class=\"\"> However,<\/span><span class=\"\"> as Professor Bharat explains,<\/span><span class=\"\"> ECMO is not a full-fledged artificial lung because it cannot adequately support heart function and blood flow on its own.<\/span><span class=\"\"> The new system,<\/span><span class=\"\"> by contrast,<\/span><span class=\"\"> succeeded in maintaining normal cardiac function even in the total absence of lungs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\"><span class=\"\">Crucially,<\/span><span class=\"\"> after the removal of the damaged lungs\u2014the primary source of the bacterial infection\u2014the patient&#8217;s condition improved rapidly.<\/span><span class=\"\"> Once the body was cleared of the infection,<\/span><span class=\"\"> the patient was placed on the transplant list and soon received donor organs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\"><span class=\"\">Two years after the operation,<\/span><span class=\"\"> the patient is in satisfactory condition,<\/span><span class=\"\"> with both their heart and new lungs functioning normally.<\/span><span class=\"\"> This precedent opens new possibilities in the field of medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-026-00239-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nature<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Surgeons at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine have performed a unique procedure.
