Later, despite surgical intervention and chemotherapy, metastases spread to the liver, spleen, lungs, and brain.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\">Milo&#8217;s last chance proved to be an experimental therapy conducted at the <b data-path-to-node=\"5\" data-index-in-node=\"73\">Hopp Children&#8217;s Cancer Center Heidelberg (KiTZ)<\/b>. Scientists discovered that the teenager&#8217;s tumor cells contained a specific protein, which allowed doctors to &#8220;train&#8221; the patient&#8217;s own immune cells\u2014<b data-path-to-node=\"5\" data-index-in-node=\"270\">T-lymphocytes<\/b>\u2014to recognize and destroy this protein.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">The treatment process involved several stages:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"7\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"7,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Extraction<\/b> of immune cells from the teenager&#8217;s blood;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"7,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Genetic modification<\/b> of these cells under laboratory conditions;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7,2,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"7,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Reintroduction<\/b> of the modified cells into the body via infusion.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\">Just 12 days after the infusion, an MRI scan confirmed the disappearance of tumor foci, and after 120 days, living tumor cells had completely vanished from his body.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\">Doctors emphasize that this therapy is a <b data-path-to-node=\"9\" data-index-in-node=\"41\">revolutionary achievement<\/b> in pediatric oncology. Until now, similar immunotherapies were used to treat leukemia; this marks the first time the method has been successfully applied against solid tissue tumors.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10\">According to specialists, pediatric cancers are biologically different from adult cancers; they contain fewer mutations, which makes many traditional drugs less effective in adolescents. Milo&#8217;s case proved that with an <b data-path-to-node=\"10\" data-index-in-node=\"219\">individualized genetic approach<\/b>, even the most aggressive forms of the disease can be defeated.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11\">Milo, who is passionate about mountain biking, returned to training shortly after completing the therapy.
