Tsitsishvili Children’s Hospital, the forum focused on patient-centered care and high-tech approaches.

The conference agenda was packed with presentations based on clinical experience. The materials presented, along with photo visualizations reflecting the topics discussed, highlighted the difficult path that Georgian pediatric surgery has traversed in recent years. This meeting served not only to demonstrate achieved results but also to deepen the professional dialogue that ensures the sharing of practical knowledge.

One of the key figures in this technological transformation is Dr. Erekle Mosidze, Head of the Surgical Department at the Tsitsishvili Children’s Clinic of “Georgia Clinics” JSC. The active implementation of pediatric laparoscopic-thoracoscopic surgery in Georgia is directly linked to his name, as the Tsitsishvili Clinic was the first in the country to initiate these practices back in 2019.

Dr. Erekle, how would you evaluate today’s meeting, what was its main goal, and what is the general significance of such events?

This was the first time in Georgia that a conference was held exclusively dedicated to the management of congenital surgical pathologies in children. This event is a priority for both the country and the professional community—our colleagues must have exhaustive information regarding the current stage of Georgian medicine and the results we have achieved in the treatment of congenital anomalies.

Today, the main focus in pediatric surgery is on minimally invasive approaches. From your observations, how successfully have we transitioned from traditional methods to modern standards, and what is hindering this process from accelerating further?

Regarding minimally invasive approaches, the entire world has now moved beyond just laparoscopy and thoracoscopy to robotic surgery. We are following this path progressively—implementing every technology considered a modern standard step-by-step.

It is essential to note that two main components are required for this process: the training of highly qualified specialists and the appropriate material-technical base. At the Tsitsishvili Clinic, we have had the necessary equipment since 2019 and have been successfully performing such interventions ever since.

However, further acceleration of the process is currently hindered by low awareness and a lack of young, trained specialists who can fully master these methods and implement them in practice.

Speaking of technological transformation, it should be noted that your name is associated with the introduction of more than six laparoscopic-thoracoscopic surgeries that had never been performed in Georgia before. When a surgeon takes the first steps nationwide to establish a new method, what is the greatest difficulty at that time?

In my practice, while introducing modern minimally invasive technologies—laparoscopy and thoracoscopy—the primary obstacle was still the low level of awareness.

The main difficulty stemmed from a lack of information on the part of both patients and colleagues regarding the essence and advantages of these methods. That is why, when implementing new approaches, the main challenge becomes not only technical execution but also gaining the professional and public trust that is quite difficult to achieve in the face of a knowledge deficit.

When we talk about pediatric surgery and congenital pathologies, we must realize that the treatment process does not end in the operating block. In your observation, what role does parental awareness play in the clinical outcome and the ultimate success of rehabilitation?

Parental awareness is very important, as it helps us both before the surgery and during postoperative rehabilitation. However, unlike surgeries performed via the open method, surgeries conducted through laparoscopy and thoracoscopy require a minimal postoperative period and rehabilitation.

On March 21, the Sheraton Grand Tbilisi Metechi Palace hosted a large-scale medical conference titled “Innovation in Pediatric Surgery – Management of Congenital Pathologies.” Organized by “Georgia Clinics” JSC and the I.
