This is a date when society expresses gratitude toward those individuals whose profession is dedicated to saving lives and caring for health.

The history of this day dates back to the 19th century and is linked to one of the most significant achievements in medical history. On March 30, 1842, American surgeon Crawford Long used ether anesthesia for the first time during a patient’s surgery. This discovery laid the foundation for revolutionary changes in medicine by making surgical interventions painless. To immortalize this date, the first official event in honor of doctors was held in 1933 in the state of Georgia, USA.

According to tradition, the red carnation is considered the symbol of this day. The color red is associated with energy, dedication, and love, perfectly reflecting a doctor’s professional ethics. In many countries, patients and colleagues send each other symbolic cards and flowers, highlighting the immense responsibility carried by every “white coat.”

On an international scale, this day was declared an official holiday in 1990 when the President of the United States signed the relevant document. Since then, March 30th has expanded beyond the borders of a single country and has become a global platform to discuss the challenges medics face daily.

In the modern era, with medicine at a new stage of technological progress, the role of doctors is valued even more. Despite the development of Artificial Intelligence and innovative equipment, the human factor, decision-making skills, and personal contact with the patient remain irreplaceable.

AMA

Every year on March 30th, the world celebrates International Doctors’ Day.
