They are expressing a vote of no confidence in the Minister of Health, Mikheil Sarjveladze, and are demanding his resignation.

The protesters’ primary demand is a public meeting with Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze in the presence of the media. According to their assessment, the information provided by the Health Minister to the Prime Minister does not fully reflect the actual needs of the patients. They argue this hinders timely and effective decision-making, especially since for these patients, “every day and hour is decisive.”

The demonstration began with a minute of silence. On March 3, Georgia lost another 17-year-old to the disease, marking the third fatal case in the past year.

Zakaria Gvishiani, chairman of the organization “Fight Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Together,” gave the government a five-day deadline to meet their demands:

“An open meeting must be arranged with the Prime Minister, even if the Health Minister and the doctors who support us to the end are present. The issue will be discussed, and ultimately, it will be publicly confirmed that our Health Minister is a liar… We request a meeting with the Prime Minister within five days—not as an ultimatum, of course—to tell him the truth in the presence of the Health Minister. He [the Minister] will have nothing to say… Otherwise, we will hold continuous street protests and may even remain in tents.”

According to Gvishiani, the parents also walked out of the most recent working meeting at the Ministry of Health as a sign of protest. The participants systematically appeal to the state to import life-critical medications and fund medical research. Furthermore, they are demanding the creation of a multidisciplinary medical team to ensure continuous, integrated, and multi-profile clinical monitoring for patients.

Notably, over the past year, parents have met with Ministry of Health representatives numerous times, yet they believe the issue remains unresolved. Following a meeting in February 2026 with the Head of the Government Administration, Levan Zhorzholiani, they received a promise that the matter would be studied, but no concrete results have materialized to date.

According to available data, approximately 100 patients live with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in Georgia, the majority of whom are children. The disease is genetic, causing progressive muscle weakness and atrophy, and without therapeutic treatment, often results in premature death.

On March 28, parents of children with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) held another protest outside the Government Administration.
