in the Republic of Burundi: Unknown disease claims 5 lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-path-to-node=\"3\"><span class=\"\">An outbreak of an acute infectious disease of unknown etiology has been recorded in the East African region,<\/span><span class=\"\"> specifically in the <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"3\" data-index-in-node=\"129\">Republic of Burundi<\/b><span class=\"\">.<\/span><span class=\"\"> Since late March 2026,<\/span> <b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"3\" data-index-in-node=\"173\">35 cases<\/b><span class=\"\"> of infection have been identified in the <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"3\" data-index-in-node=\"223\">Mpanda District<\/b><span class=\"\"> in the northern part of the country,<\/span><span class=\"\"> five of which resulted in fatalities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\"><span class=\"\">The clinical presentation of this unidentified illness includes the following symptoms:<\/span> <b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"4\" data-index-in-node=\"88\">hyperthermia<\/b><span class=\"\"> (high fever),<\/span><span class=\"\"> vomiting,<\/span><span class=\"\"> diarrhea,<\/span> <b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"4\" data-index-in-node=\"135\">hematuria<\/b><span class=\"\"> (blood in the urine),<\/span> <b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"4\" data-index-in-node=\"167\">asthenia<\/b><span class=\"\"> (pronounced weakness),<\/span><span class=\"\"> and abdominal pain.<\/span><span class=\"\"> In severe clinical cases,<\/span><span class=\"\"> patients exhibited <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"4\" data-index-in-node=\"264\">jaundice<\/b><span class=\"\"> (icterus) and anemia.<\/span><span class=\"\"> According to epidemiological research,<\/span><span class=\"\"> transmission primarily occurs within <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"4\" data-index-in-node=\"371\">family clusters<\/b><span class=\"\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\"><span class=\"\">The Ministry of Health of Burundi reported the outbreak to the <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"5\" data-index-in-node=\"63\">World Health Organization (WHO)<\/b><span class=\"\"> on March 31,<\/span><span class=\"\"> 2026.<\/span><span class=\"\"> Currently,<\/span><span class=\"\"> active fieldwork is underway at the epicenter of the outbreak,<\/span><span class=\"\"> encompassing early case detection,<\/span><span class=\"\"> isolation,<\/span><span class=\"\"> and contact tracing.<\/span><span class=\"\"> To verify the etiological agent,<\/span><span class=\"\"> biological samples have been dispatched to <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"5\" data-index-in-node=\"331\">international referral laboratories<\/b><span class=\"\"> for diagnostic testing.<\/span><span class=\"\"> During the initial stage of differential diagnosis,<\/span><span class=\"\"> several highly pathogenic <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"5\" data-index-in-node=\"469\">viral hemorrhagic fevers<\/b><span class=\"\"> endemic to the region\u2014including Ebola,<\/span><span class=\"\"> Marburg virus,<\/span><span class=\"\"> Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF),<\/span><span class=\"\"> Yellow Fever,<\/span><span class=\"\"> and Rift Valley Fever\u2014have already been ruled out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\"><span class=\"\">At this stage,<\/span><span class=\"\"> scientific research is focused on both rare bacterial agents (such as <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"85\">leptospirosis<\/b><span class=\"\">) and environmental chemical or toxic contamination as potential etiological factors.<\/span><span class=\"\"> Additionally,<\/span><span class=\"\"> experts are actively investigating whether the outbreak is caused by a mutated version of a known pathogen or an entirely new infectious agent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\"><span class=\"\">The current crisis is further exacerbated by the limited material and technical resources of the country\u2019s healthcare system,<\/span><span class=\"\"> as well as the rising dynamics of <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"7\" data-index-in-node=\"160\">Mpox<\/b><span class=\"\"> and <\/span><b class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"7\" data-index-in-node=\"169\">cholera<\/b><span class=\"\"> cases,<\/span><span class=\"\"> which are exerting critical pressure on the medical sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\"><span class=\"\">International partners,<\/span><span class=\"\"> under the auspices of the WHO,<\/span> continue to provide technical and logistical support to Burundi to optimize epidemiological surveillance systems and laboratory capacities. Simultaneously, active <b data-path-to-node=\"8\" data-index-in-node=\"218\">risk communication<\/b> is being conducted among the population regarding the importance of preventive hygiene measures and early diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afro.who.int\/countries\/burundi\/news\/burundi-investigates-illness-has-caused-five-deaths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Afro.who.int<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An outbreak of an acute infectious disease of unknown etiology has been recorded in the East African region, specifically in the Republic of Burundi.
