Data shows that individuals with this diagnosis are <b data-path-to-node=\"2\" data-index-in-node=\"242\">1.6 times more likely<\/b> to die prematurely compared to others of the same age and sex.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\">Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, scientists analyzed the records of over <b data-path-to-node=\"3\" data-index-in-node=\"102\">11,000 professionally diagnosed patients<\/b> over the age of 12 (62% of whom were female) and compared them to a control group of more than 45,700 individuals. The data spanned from 2001 to 2022, with an average follow-up period of 7.3 years.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\">The researchers&#8217; primary goal was to specifically determine the risks associated with Bipolar II Disorder. In previous studies, BD-II was often grouped with Bipolar I (BD-I), making it difficult to assess its unique risks. Unlike Bipolar I\u2014which is characterized by acute mania and frequent hospitalizations\u2014Bipolar II is primarily defined by alternating periods of depression and <b data-path-to-node=\"4\" data-index-in-node=\"381\">hypomania<\/b> (a less severe manic phase).<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"5\">Key Findings of the Study<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">Statistical modeling revealed that the risk of premature death among individuals with BD-II is significantly higher than the general population average. According to the study:<\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"7\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7,0,0\">The likelihood of death from <b data-path-to-node=\"7,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"29\">physical illnesses<\/b>\u2014including cardiovascular, pulmonary, and digestive system diseases\u2014increases by <b data-path-to-node=\"7,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"128\">37%<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7,1,0\">The disparity is even more stark regarding <b data-path-to-node=\"7,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"43\">unnatural causes<\/b>, where the risk of accidents, violence, and suicide is nearly <b data-path-to-node=\"7,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"122\">4.5 times higher<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\">Particularly noteworthy is the comparison between Bipolar II and Bipolar I diagnoses. The analysis revealed that the overall mortality risk for <b data-path-to-node=\"8\" data-index-in-node=\"144\">BD-II is 24% higher<\/b> than for patients with BD-I. Despite this significant difference, the rate of lethality caused specifically by unnatural causes was found to be identical in both clinical groups.<\/p>\n<h3 data-path-to-node=\"9\">Clinical Significance<\/h3>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"10\">These results directly indicate that patients with Bipolar II Disorder require proactive and comprehensive psychiatric, as well as general medical care.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"11\">Despite the strength of the evidence, the study has certain limitations. The data is based entirely on the Taiwanese population, which complicates its global generalization. Additionally, the study could not evaluate important variables such as lifestyle (diet, physical activity), or the frequency and severity of episodes.
