At first glance, this approach encourages creativity; however, it is precisely the lack of centralized filtering and such large-scale, uncontrolled content production that makes the platform particularly dangerous for minors. In games created by millions of amateurs, content that is inappropriate, violent, or contains hidden dangers for children frequently slips through.<\/p>\n
Main Threats<\/b><\/p>\n
There are millions of amateur games on Roblox where, despite filters, so-called “Condos”\u2014visuals containing adult themes and violence\u2014often bypass the system. Besides inappropriate content, the platform carries a high risk of communication with strangers. Malicious individuals and predators (so-called groomers) actively use the chat function to gain children’s trust in order to subsequently move them to other, less secure communication channels. Additionally, the problems of financial fraud (Robux scams) and cyberbullying from peers are acute.<\/p>\n
The scale of these threats is detailed in a scandalous report by the investment group Hindenburg Research, which called the platform an “X-rated pedophile hellscape.” The extensive report highlights that the company’s moderation systems are critically flawed and ineffective; security filters often fail to detect games of an explicit sexual nature and suspicious user communications.<\/p>\n
The research also revealed severe manipulative schemes. According to the document, the in-game virtual currency (Robux), beyond its legitimate purpose, has become a sort of tool for coercing minors. Perpetrators use “Robux” to bribe children, extort their personal photos or videos, and for subsequent blackmail. Hindenburg Research concluded that the company had been focused on rapid user growth and commercial profit for years, resulting in the neglect of fundamental safety standards for minors.<\/p>\n
The Company’s Response<\/b><\/p>\n
Due to the growing threats, as of April 2026, more than 140 lawsuits have been consolidated against the company in U.S. federal courts. Parents accuse Roblox of failing to protect children from sexual exploitation and “grooming.” Amid the criticism, the company has already reached settlements with several states and agreed to pay more than $35 million in fines to fund child safety programs.<\/p>\n
In response to the fierce criticism, the company has tightened its safety policies and begun implementing radical changes. Sending direct messages (DMs) outside of games has been automatically banned for children under 13. Furthermore, strict age verification mechanisms (Face ID, ID cards) were introduced, and remote parental controls were expanded.
