The Center of Allergy and Immunology traditionally joins this important occasion, supporting the National Celiac Association of Georgia—an organization that has been actively working for four years to raise public awareness about this condition in Georgia.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the ingestion of gluten (a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and their derivatives) causes damage to the lining of the small intestine. This process interferes with the body’s normal absorption of nutrients, leading to serious health problems over time.

The symptoms of the disease are quite diverse, encompassing gastrointestinal disturbances (abdominal pain, bloating, chronic diarrhea) as well as non-specific signs such as chronic fatigue, weight loss, anemia, and skin rashes. Often, due to a lack of awareness, patients live for years without an accurate diagnosis, which increases the risk of complications.

Currently, the only effective way to treat and manage celiac disease is lifelong adherence to a strict, gluten-free diet. Consequently, the Center of Allergy and Immunology and the National Celiac Association emphasize the critical importance of early diagnosis, professional medical supervision, and the accessibility of gluten-free products nationwide.

The objective of this day is to once again remind both the public and the healthcare sector of the daily challenges faced by individuals living with celiac disease, and to foster the creation of a safe and supportive environment for them.

Celiac.org

Today, May 16th, the world marks International Celiac Disease Awareness Day.
