Although autism has been studied for decades, scientists are still trying to understand how social differences emerge during early childhood and how they change throughout life. A new large-scale study published in the journal <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41593-026-02231-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nature Human<\/a> Behaviour<\/span><\/span> shows that autism-related social differences appear at a very early age, although they may significantly change as a person grows older.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"591\" data-end=\"1106\">The study was conducted with the participation of researchers from <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Beijing Normal University<\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Peking University<\/span><\/span>. They analyzed 2,622 scientific papers published over the last 35 years, involving autistic individuals of different ages, ranging from six-month-old infants to adults. The main goal of the study was not only to describe social difficulties, but also to understand how patterns of social functioning are organized and how different social abilities are interconnected.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1108\" data-end=\"1689\">The scientists examined 22 different social skills, including attention, empathy, facial expression recognition, imitation, theory of mind, and relationship management. According to their findings, social differences in autism are not random or isolated phenomena. On the contrary, they form a closely interconnected hierarchical system. Researchers believe that these differences initially emerge at the level of social motivation \u2014 for example, how strongly a child is attracted to human interaction. This motivation then determines how other social abilities will later develop.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1691\" data-end=\"2327\">It is no secret that social development is not a static or fixed process, and this study confirmed that idea as well. Although these differences appear in early childhood, they may change significantly throughout life. Some individuals gradually develop stronger social skills as they age, while others encounter additional challenges during adolescence and adulthood. This indicates that autism is not a uniform condition and that different individuals may follow very different developmental paths. Therefore, autism can also be viewed as a condition in which some individuals simply require greater support to develop certain skills.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2329\" data-end=\"2789\">The researchers also found that social functioning is influenced not only by biological factors. Environment, culture, and social support play a significant role as well. In countries where social support systems are stronger and society is more inclusive, the social differences between autistic and neurotypical individuals appear to be less pronounced. Conversely, in more competitive and less supportive environments, these differences become more visible.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2791\" data-end=\"3277\">The authors of the study believe that these findings could significantly change modern approaches to autism assessment and support. In their view, it is essential to create broader and more multidimensional evaluation systems that are not based solely on a limited number of symptoms. In the future, scientists plan to develop more precise models of social development and use brain imaging studies and computational modeling to better understand how social functions develop in autism.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3279\" data-end=\"3549\">This is precisely why raising awareness and self-awareness within society is so important. Avoiding the stigmatization of autistic individuals and promoting their full integration into society can produce remarkable results, both for them and for the people around them.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3551\" data-end=\"3899\">This study once again emphasizes that autism is not merely a diagnosis. It represents a diverse neurodevelopmental spectrum in which every individual case is unique.
