{"id":23301,"date":"2026-08-06T11:48:37","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T07:48:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medscriptum.org\/?p=23301"},"modified":"2026-08-06T12:00:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T08:00:14","slug":"the-definition-of-autism-has-expanded-excessively-which-increases-the-risk-of-inaccurate-diagnoses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medscriptum.org\/en\/the-definition-of-autism-has-expanded-excessively-which-increases-the-risk-of-inaccurate-diagnoses\/","title":{"rendered":"The definition of autism has expanded excessively, which increases the risk of inaccurate diagnoses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-path-to-node=\"1\"><span class=\"\">According to a new editorial by Dame Uta Frith,<\/span><span class=\"\"> Professor at University College London (UCL),<\/span><span class=\"\"> the definition of autism has expanded to such an extent that it is causing confusion and inaccurate diagnoses.<\/span><span class=\"\"> Frith,<\/span><span class=\"\"> whose pioneering research in the 1960s and 1970s laid the foundation for the modern understanding of autism,<\/span><span class=\"\"> believes that the term &#8220;Autism Spectrum Disorder&#8221; (ASD) has become too broad to be practically useful today.<\/span><span class=\"\"> The diagnosis now encompasses a vast group of individuals,<\/span><span class=\"\"> ranging from those who require 24-hour care to people who live entirely independent lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"2\"><span class=\"\">In a paper published in the journal Psychological Medicine,<\/span><span class=\"\"> the author notes that in the 1940s,<\/span><span class=\"\"> when autism was first identified,<\/span><span class=\"\"> it referred only to a small group of children who experienced severe difficulties in social interaction,<\/span><span class=\"\"> communication,<\/span><span class=\"\"> and behavior.<\/span><span class=\"\"> Over time,<\/span><span class=\"\"> the definition broadened to include individuals with milder characteristics and without language or learning difficulties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\"><span class=\"\">As a result,<\/span><span class=\"\"> the number of diagnosed individuals has increased dramatically.<\/span><span class=\"\"> While in the 1960s in the UK,<\/span><span class=\"\"> autism was diagnosed in only 4 out of 10,<\/span><span class=\"\">000 children,<\/span><span class=\"\"> today that figure stands at 1 in 57 pupils.<\/span><span class=\"\"> The scientist links a growth of this scale to several factors,<\/span><span class=\"\"> including heightened awareness,<\/span><span class=\"\"> expanded diagnostic criteria,<\/span><span class=\"\"> self-diagnosis influenced by social media,<\/span><span class=\"\"> and a cultural tendency to explain everyday struggles in medical terms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\"><span class=\"\">Over her 50-year career,<\/span><span class=\"\"> Professor Frith studied the cognitive foundations of autism and formulated two fundamental theories regarding the deficit in theory of mind and weak central coherence.<\/span><span class=\"\"> In her new paper,<\/span><span class=\"\"> she highlights the vast difference between patients diagnosed at an early age and those diagnosed later in life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\"><span class=\"\">Those diagnosed in childhood often have language or learning difficulties,<\/span><span class=\"\"> whereas individuals diagnosed during adolescence or adulthood generally possess average or high intelligence and frequently exhibit co-occurring conditions,<\/span><span class=\"\"> such as anxiety,<\/span><span class=\"\"> depression,<\/span><span class=\"\"> or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).<\/span><span class=\"\"> Some studies suggest that there may also be a different genetic profile between these groups,<\/span><span class=\"\"> raising the question of whether we might be dealing with entirely different conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/psychological-medicine\/article\/autism-spectrum-disorder-has-it-lost-its-meaning-and-is-it-leading-to-misdiagnosis\/AF834026D004D42B1963BEA515495AC6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cambridge<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to a new editorial by Dame Uta Frith, Professor at University College London (UCL), the definition of autism has expanded to such an extent that it is causing confusion and inaccurate diagnoses.
