{"id":23455,"date":"2026-08-11T11:42:21","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T07:42:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/medscriptum.org\/?p=23455"},"modified":"2026-08-11T12:00:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T08:00:29","slug":"dogs-brains-distinguish-between-human-facial-emotions-including-expressions-of-fear-and-sadness-a-new-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/medscriptum.org\/en\/dogs-brains-distinguish-between-human-facial-emotions-including-expressions-of-fear-and-sadness-a-new-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Dogs&#8217; brains distinguish between human facial emotions, including expressions of fear and sadness: A new study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-path-to-node=\"1\"><span class=\"\">According to a new study by researchers from the University of Vienna published in the journal <\/span><i class=\"\" data-path-to-node=\"1\" data-index-in-node=\"95\">iScience<\/i><span class=\"\">,<\/span><span class=\"\"> dogs&#8217; brains not only distinguish between positive and negative emotions,<\/span><span class=\"\"> but are also able to differentiate between various negative human facial expressions,<\/span><span class=\"\"> such as fear and sadness.<\/span><span class=\"\"> Although previous experiments studied dogs&#8217; perception of human facial expressions only at a general level,<\/span><span class=\"\"> the new paper confirms for the first time that four-legged pets are also capable of differentiating negative emotions within the same category.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"2\"><span class=\"\">Within the framework of the study,<\/span><span class=\"\"> scientists examined the brain activity of dogs that were specially trained to stay calmly and without any restriction inside a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner.<\/span><span class=\"\"> In the first experiment,<\/span><span class=\"\"> the animals were shown photos of happy and neutral faces of unfamiliar people.<\/span><span class=\"\"> The results showed that when happy facial expressions were shown,<\/span><span class=\"\"> activity increased significantly in the areas of the dogs&#8217; brains that control visual,<\/span><span class=\"\"> social,<\/span><span class=\"\"> and reward-related processes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\"><span class=\"\">In the second experiment,<\/span><span class=\"\"> scientists showed 12 dogs four different human facial expressions:<\/span><span class=\"\"> joy,<\/span><span class=\"\"> sadness,<\/span><span class=\"\"> fear,<\/span><span class=\"\"> and anger.<\/span><span class=\"\"> Through machine learning and analysis of complete brain activity,<\/span><span class=\"\"> it was determined that a dog&#8217;s brain easily distinguishes a happy face from a negative one,<\/span><span class=\"\"> and scanning of brain regions showed that the animals distinguish between fear and sadness,<\/span><span class=\"\"> as well as fear and anger faces (except for cases of anger and sadness,<\/span><span class=\"\"> which they found difficult to tell apart).<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\"><span class=\"\">According to the researchers,<\/span><span class=\"\"> perceiving different negative emotions is important for dogs because they are associated with different types of threats,<\/span><span class=\"\"> although to distinguish between anger and sadness,<\/span><span class=\"\"> they may require additional cues,<\/span><span class=\"\"> such as human body language.<\/span><span class=\"\"> The obtained results once again highlight how the dog&#8217;s brain has changed during thousands of years of coexistence and domestication with humans,<\/span><span class=\"\"> which in practice\u2014for example,<\/span><span class=\"\"> when training dogs\u2014provides the opportunity to effectively use positive emotions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/aug\/10\/dogs-distinguish-fearful-angry-sad-human-faces-brain-scans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>According to a new study by researchers from the University of Vienna published in the journal iScience, dogs&#8217; brains not only distinguish between positive and negative emotions, but are also able to differentiate between various negative human facial expressions, such as fear and sadness.
