Diamantoni reported his findings directly to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, federal health officials decline to tally either tragedy as measles-related, maintaining a cautionary disclaimer on the agency portal.<\/p>\n
The victims succumbed to starkly different medical crises. Six-week-old Mary Stoltzfus suffered from Amish lethal microcephaly, an inherited disorder causing severe developmental complications. A measles infection ultimately triggered her August 18 death, according to attending physicians. Ivan Miller died on August 14 shortly after birth from a ruptured spleen. Although the newborn contracted measles\u2014prompting its inclusion on the death certificate as “a significant condition”\u2014Diamantoni clarified that the spleen rupture occurred independently.<\/p>\n
Neither infant qualified for the standard vaccine, which pediatricians introduce around the first year of life.<\/p>\n
The fatalities fueled an intense political clash between Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and federal leaders within President Donald Trump’s administration. Shapiro argued that widespread community immunization could protect vulnerable infants from such fates. Conversely, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. questioned the state\u2019s reporting, publicly suggesting officials “fabricated” the accounts.<\/p>\n
Edits on the CDC website deepened public skepticism. After initially noting two measles deaths, the agency altered its webpage to signal a pause during internal evaluation.
