The WHO Country Office in Georgia has a new director \u2014 as of September 14, Mr. Jo\u00e3o Breda has officially assumed his role as the WHO Representative in Georgia.<\/p>\n
Mr. Breda is a Portuguese national and holds a PhD in nutrition, a master\u2019s degree in public health, and a master\u2019s degree in business administration. He has more than 15 years of experience working with WHO, serving in various leadership positions.<\/p>\n
Before arriving in Georgia, Mr. Breda was WHO Special Representative in Greece and headed the WHO European Centre for Primary Health Care\u2019s Office for Quality of Care and Patient Safety (QoC), based in Athens. He also established the Athens Centre of Excellence, which focuses on improving the quality of healthcare and patient safety, reducing inequalities, and promoting innovation and leadership in healthcare.<\/p>\n
In addition, as Head of the Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity Programme at the WHO Regional Office for Europe, Mr. Breda led work on the development, implementation and evaluation of food and nutrition action plans and physical activity strategies. He also headed the WHO European Office for the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases, which he established and developed into a major regional initiative.<\/p>\n
Jo\u00e3o Breda is co-director of all five editions of the WHO European Public Health Leadership Course and led the creation of the WHO European Autumn School on Quality of Care and Patient Safety. He also previously served as President of the WHO Regional Office for Europe Staff Association (EURSA).<\/p>\n
His contribution to public health and healthcare leadership has received wide recognition. Portugal\u2019s Ministry of Health awarded him a Gold Medal for outstanding service to healthcare, while WHO has twice presented him with an Award of Excellence for outstanding team performance. He is also the recipient of more than 20 scientific and academic awards.<\/p>\n
As a researcher, Mr. Breda has published more than 400 academic articles and reports, as well as more than 20 books.<\/p>\n
