At the 10th Congress dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the founding of the Georgian Society of Cardiology, special attention was devoted to the prevention and rehabilitation of cardiovascular diseases.<\/p>\n
Professor Zurab Klimiashvili<\/span><\/strong>, President of the Georgian Association of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Rehabilitation, spoke to us about the innovative, holistic approaches reflected in modern European guidelines, the challenges of cardiac rehabilitation in Georgia, and the close partnership with the European Society of Cardiology.<\/p>\n Mr. Zurab, what main innovations and novel approaches are currently being established in cardiology practice?<\/b><\/p>\n In general, developments are moving at a rapid pace. The main focus of this year’s guidelines is a holistic approach to the patient and the involvement of adjacent specialties in cardiac rehabilitation \u2014 such as endocrinology, internal medicine, and nephrology.<\/p>\n The interconnection between heart, kidney, and liver pathologies was discovered long ago, but now there is a greater concentration on the fact that when treating heart pathologies, we must consider the condition of these organs, as the function of other organs is of crucial importance in patient management.<\/p>\n Our Prevention Society session was structured in precisely this format \u2014 around a single patient through a multidisciplinary discussion, with the participation of a cardiologist (myself), an endocrinologist (Ketevan Asatiani), a nephrologist (Avto Tataradze), and a professor of internal medicine (Kakha Tchelidze).<\/p>\n The guest of honor at the congress, former President of the European Association of Preventive Cardiology, Ana Abreu, also addressed these topics in two presentations.<\/p>\n The first of these focused on patient care and rehabilitation issues, while the second \u2014 our joint session \u2014 covered cardiometabolic syndrome followed by a practical discussion on direct patient management.<\/p>\n How would you assess the current level of cardiac rehabilitation development in Georgia?<\/b><\/p>\n Unfortunately, cardiac rehabilitation is practically undeveloped here, and we lack appropriate centers. What happens in the clinic prior to discharge is only the first, partial stage of rehabilitation.<\/p>\n In many European countries, the second stage is highly developed \u2014 real physical, mental, and psychological recovery of the patient after discharge in specialized centers. This phase does not currently exist in Georgia, and hopefully, it will develop in the future.<\/p>\n How do you evaluate the cooperation between the Georgian Society of Cardiology and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC)?<\/b><\/p>\n 35 years ago, from the very founding of the Society, collegial relations began between us; however, in the last decade, and particularly over the past 5\u20136 years, this cooperation has become very close. Georgian speakers present almost annually at the European Society of Cardiology Congress, and our colleagues serve as session chairs.<\/p>\n During Archil Chukhrukidze’s presidency, the organization of joint sessions began, and the President of the Georgian Society of Cardiology, Professor Rusudan Agladze, further expanded these relations. Mrs. Rusudan has been elected as a board member of the European Society of Cardiology, where she participates in activities across several directions (both educational and strategic management). Our other Georgian colleagues are also actively involved in board activities.<\/p>\n Another result of this partnership is the attendance at the congress of the ESC Secretary and Chair of the Advocacy Committee, Professor Susanna Price. This year, she presented the global program “Save Heart,” supported by the European Commission. At a meeting held in the European Heart House in Nice, attended by myself and Mrs. Rusudan, this initiative, which spans all European countries, was voiced for the first time. We have already created a corresponding program for Georgia, with Mrs. Susanna serving as one of its main coordinators.<\/p>\n What is your main message for your colleagues?<\/b><\/p>\n The credo of the Georgian Society of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention is that “the best doctors prevent disease.” Therefore, immense work needs to be carried out to raise public awareness so that people know that effective prevention methods, including lifestyle changes, exist before a disease develops.
