According to the scientist, losing touch with reality and the spread of pseudoscience critically undermine efforts to address global challenges such as regulating artificial intelligence, tackling the climate crisis and preventing global wars.

“When people become disconnected from facts, we face a very serious problem. Addressing global challenges of this kind requires us to maintain close contact with reality,” the physicist notes.

The scientist does not rule out the existence of other civilisations in the universe, but suggests that our civilisation may currently be the only one in our own galaxy, the Milky Way. This possibility places an enormous responsibility on humanity to avoid destroying itself.

Meanwhile, Cox comments on the search for potential signs of life within our Solar System. He notes that the space missions Juice and Europa Clipper are heading to Jupiter’s system to study its moon Europa in detail as a potentially habitable environment.

The scientist also highlights the negative impact of Brexit on British scientific institutions. In Cox’s assessment, leaving the European Union has damaged Britain’s collaborative research framework, restricted the free movement of students and academic staff, and hindered participation in international projects such as Horizon.

Professor Cox is currently working on a new project, Symphonic Horizons. A 90-piece orchestra will perform works by Strauss, Sibelius and Mahler at the Royal Opera House, while Brian Cox will introduce the audience to the latest scientific discoveries about the cosmos during musical interludes.

Prospect

British physicist and University of Manchester professor Brian Cox believes that human stupidity and the disregard for facts pose the greatest threats to humanity’s future.
