Ozempic and Wegovy to become 50% cheaper: Novo Nordisk plans to halve prices starting from 2027

The Danish pharmaceutical giant, Novo Nordisk, has made a significant decision: starting in 2027, the company will reduce prices by up to 50% for its most in-demand medications—the weight-loss drug Wegovy and the diabetes treatments Ozempic and Rybelsus. This move is a direct response to the intensifying battle with its main competitor, Eli Lilly.

Why are prices changing?

The company aims to make these drugs more affordable for individuals who pay full price out-of-pocket or whose insurance coverage is tied to the drug’s list price.

Under this strategy, the price of the popular drug Wegovy will drop from its current $1,349 to $675, while the costs for Ozempic and Rybelsus (currently $1,028) will also see substantial reductions.

It is noteworthy that for insured patients, the monthly co-pay will remain minimal—at approximately $25—while a special discount system is already in place for those in the self-pay category.

Future Outlook

Novo Nordisk, once the undisputed market leader, is currently ceding ground to Eli Lilly. The competitor is generating a higher volume of new prescriptions, while Novo Nordisk’s stock price has dipped sharply due to a slowdown in sales momentum and disappointing clinical trial results for its new drug, CagriSema.

Political factors are also influencing the situation. Both companies have reached agreements with the Trump administration, allowing them to expand access to Medicare patients and further drive demand for these medications.

The 50% price cut starting in 2027 is a strategic attempt by Novo Nordisk to regain market share and halt its competitor’s dominance. Although the company forecasts a slowdown in profit growth for this year, the radical price reduction is a long-term play.

By taking this step, the company aims to become accessible to millions of new consumers and reclaim its status as the market leader.
