A massive UK health records study presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress in Barcelona linked the medication to a nearly 40% reduction in asthma attacks alongside a 20% drop in COPD flare-ups.
Imperial College London epidemiologist Professor Chloe Bloom led the research team, tracking over 80,000 patient records across four parallel cohorts. The team compared individuals taking GLP-1 medications against those prescribed standard sulfonylurea diabetes drugs, watching specifically for severe airway flare-ups.
Bloom noted that clinicians routinely prescribe GLP-1 receptor agonists for obesity and type 2 diabetes, while earlier lab work hinted at potential anti-inflammatory pathways within pulmonary tissue.
