Skincare beyond TikTok trends: The scientific reality and its importance for health

Share

Interest in skincare has surged recently, driven largely by social media trends. However, dermatologists warn that overly complex, often 12-step routines and products lacking scientific backing may prove harmful to the skin’s natural barrier.

The skin is the body’s first line of defense, protecting us from pathogens, chemicals, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Its top layer, the epidermis, is constantly renewing itself, while the outermost part, the stratum corneum, acts as a waterproof shield. According to dermatologists, this barrier is incredibly dynamic but also vulnerable.

What damages the skin?

  • Over-cleansing: Using harsh cleansers and alcohol-based products strips the skin of its natural oils and disrupts its acid-base balance (pH).

  • Aggressive procedures: Frequent and improper use of chemical peels can cause chronic skin sensitivity.

  • Harmful trends: Misinformation circulating on social networks, such as misleading claims about sunscreen, poses a direct threat to public health.

The Sun: The skin’s primary enemy Scientists agree that ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the greatest threat to the skin. UVA rays cause premature aging, while UVB rays cause sunburn and DNA damage, which is a primary factor in skin cancer (melanoma). Dermatologists recommend daily use of a sunscreen labeled SPF 30 (or higher) with the designation “Broad Spectrum.”

A simple recipe for healthy skin Despite thousands of expensive products on the market, an effective skincare routine is actually simple:

  • Gentle cleansing: Twice a day.

  • Hydration: Using a high-quality moisturizer.

  • Protection: Using sunscreen and protective clothing.

Dermatologists also emphasize the importance of lifestyle: healthy eating, quitting smoking, and stress management are often more effective than any cosmetic product.

Remember, the condition of your skin is a direct reflection of your overall health.
