Judy Faulkner, founder of Epic Systems and one of the most influential figures in healthcare technology, has once again captured the world’s attention. She has officially announced that she will commit nearly her entire $7.8 billion fortune—99%—to humanitarian causes.
Faulkner has dedicated her career to modernizing the healthcare system. Epic Systems, which she founded, is currently the largest provider of electronic health records in the United States. More than half of Americans’ medical histories are stored on the platform she created.
Now, through her foundation, the Roots & Wings Foundation, she plans to direct resources toward fundamental issues such as:
-
Access to Healthcare: Providing medical services to socially vulnerable populations.
-
Education and Social Equity: Removing barriers for young people and building a more equitable society.
-
Child Welfare: Supporting early development programs.
Faulkner’s move is in response to The Giving Pledge, an initiative founded by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. She joins the elite ranks of billionaires (such as Chuck Feeney) who have decided to return the vast majority of their wealth to society, either during their lifetime or after their death.
In her letter, Faulkner notes that her decision is a call to action for everyone: “Philanthropy is not measured only in dollars. It is the sharing of time, energy, and care.”
In an era where economic inequality remains a pressing issue, Faulkner’s choice stands as a rare and inspiring example.
