Why does smoking damage eyesight? Scientists have discovered a new genetic mechanism

Scientists have long known that smokers face a fourfold higher risk of vision loss; however, until now, the exact mechanism of how smoke damages the eye remained unknown.

A new study from Johns Hopkins University has revealed that tobacco triggers epigenetic changes in eye cells, stripping the visual organ of its ability to combat environmental stress. According to the research, smoke primarily damages the retinal cells responsible for our vision. Under the influence of tobacco, the structure of these cells changes such that they can no longer activate essential genes.

The researchers discovered an intriguing difference between age groups: younger cells still manage to activate protective “anti-aging” genes and survive. However, older cells lose this battle. They no longer possess the strength to trigger their self-preservation mechanisms, which ultimately leads to cell death.

This scientific discovery shifts our understanding of how tobacco harms the body. While it was previously thought that smoking merely accelerated cell aging, it is now clear that it directly deactivates the vital functions that protect cells from environmental stress. This process closely mirrors what occurs during Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Scientists hope that studying these specific genetic changes will open new avenues for medicine. Their goal is to develop treatment methods that can halt the process of vision loss in smokers and protect eye cells from dying.
