The world’s first solar-powered ambulance has successfully completed testing

A student team from Eindhoven University of Technology has developed the world’s first solar-powered ambulance. The innovative vehicle, named Stella Juva, has already undergone practical testing in Kenya. Equipped with modern medical equipment, the vehicle generates more energy during operation than it consumes, meaning it can function completely independently, without fuel or connection to the power grid.

The project was developed by 23 students, with the main goal of improving access to medical services in isolated and hard-to-reach regions where reliable infrastructure is lacking. Unlike traditional ambulances, Stella Juva brings the clinic directly to the patient. Foldable solar panels installed on the vehicle’s roof and sides generate enough energy to simultaneously power an X-ray machine, ultrasound equipment, an automated external defibrillator (AED), and refrigerators for storing vaccines.

The innovative vehicle was tested in challenging terrain in Kenya’s Narok region. During the testing, it covered more than 800 kilometers and handled difficult roads without problems. Reaching one of the remote locations took the team six hours, but the vehicle proved its reliability and durability.

The two-day test, conducted in collaboration with the international healthcare organization Amref Health Africa, showed that the energy-independent vehicle can provide comprehensive medical care to approximately 200 people. According to project leader Jeffrey Sadera, a solar-powered ambulance could be a real breakthrough for remote communities.

“Long distances and the lack of electricity in Narok make quality healthcare inaccessible. Stella Juva can bring not only doctors to these communities, but also the equipment needed for accurate diagnosis. For example, during a single visit, ultrasound examinations could be provided on-site to 30–40 pregnant women. This would allow us to identify risks at an early stage and save many lives,” says Jeffrey Sadera.

Mathijs van Gerwen, manager of the student team, believes the testing is only the first step toward the healthcare of the future. The developers hope the project’s results will inspire companies and governments and that the innovation will eventually expand on a much broader, global scale.
