FDA Approves Revolutionary Sutureless Method for Peripheral Nerve Repair

Share

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a revolutionary new method for peripheral nerve repair. This innovative approach by the company Tissium, called Nerve Guide, is leaving traditional surgical sutures in the past and ushering in a new era of treating damaged nerves with hydrogel. This is an unprecedented achievement that significantly simplifies the procedure and reduces the risk of side effects.

Challenges of Peripheral Nerve Damage and Limits of Traditional Treatment
Peripheral nerves form a complex network that is vital for the function of every part of our body. They can be damaged as a result of trauma, surgical intervention, or diabetes, which often leads to permanent loss of sensation, difficulty with movement, muscle atrophy, and chronic, debilitating pain. Traditional surgical treatment is challenging. It involves connecting the ends of the damaged nerve with microsurgical sutures or performing a nerve graft (using a nerve fragment taken from another part of the body). These methods are labor-intensive, require the utmost precision from the surgeon, and are performed with a microscope. Furthermore, the use of sutures can cause additional trauma to the delicate nerve tissue, inflammation, scar formation, and suboptimal results.

The Innovative Solution: How Nerve Guide Works
Tissium’s Nerve Guide is a biocompatible polymer-based platform that facilitates the effective repair of damaged nerves. The two damaged ends of the nerve are placed in a specially designed 3D-printed chamber that is bioresorbable (equipped with the ability to degrade and exit the body over time). Then, a special hydrogel is injected as a liquid into the damaged area, where it hardens upon exposure to light and is fixed in place. This creates a protective framework for proper nerve regeneration, promotes the proliferation of local cells, and significantly reduces the risk of additional tissue trauma or inflammation.

Tissium’s Vision and Future Prospects
Tissium is a leading bioengineering company that specializes in developing polymer-based platforms. Nerve Guide is just one application of their multi-functional TissueSeal platform. The company is actively continuing research and development with the hope that in the near future, their technology will be used not only in nerve repair but also in vascular, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal surgery.
