Scientists at the University of Missouri have identified a simple and effective habit that significantly improves quality of life. According to a new study published in the scientific journal Journal of Behavioral Medicine, maintaining a stable daily routine reduces physical pain and alleviates depressive symptoms.
The study showed that adherence to a daily schedule is of particular importance for older adults suffering from insomnia. According to the researchers, regardless of sleep quality, individuals who consistently maintained a daily routine reported less physical pain and depression than those with an irregular schedule.
As scientists explain, waking up, eating, working, and going to sleep at the same time each morning helps the body synchronize its internal biological clock — the circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm regulates sleep, mood, and other vital biological functions.
Scientists emphasize that even a slight disruption in routine, such as waking up and going to sleep at different times on weekends (often referred to as “social jetlag”), can throw off the biological clock. The researchers conclude that maintaining a solid daily routine throughout the week ensures proper body function and improves overall health status in the long term.
