According to a new study published in the scientific journal Translational Psychiatry, attending sports matches with others stimulates the natural release of oxytocin, the so-called “love hormone,” in the body. Scientists from the University of Tsukuba found that while watching a game, not only is a hormonal connection established among spectators, but even their heart rates synchronize.
The researchers conducted the experiment during a basketball match and analyzed saliva samples from the spectators. Tests showed that as the game progressed, people experienced a sharp increase in oxytocin levels, which is responsible for empathy and human bonding.
At the same time, the levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, dropped significantly in the spectators. This means that watching a game live and sharing common emotions gives people a sense of inner peace, pleasure, and a feeling of unity with others.
Notably, physical contact or direct conversation between people was not required to achieve this positive effect. According to the scientists, for those suffering from depression, social anxiety, or loneliness, attending sports events could become one of the best non-pharmacological ways to improve their psychological well-being.
