British health authorities are reporting an unusually rapid spread of meningitis in the county of Kent. In just a few days, 15 cases of infection have been confirmed, claiming the lives of two young people—a 21-year-old university student and an 18-year-old school pupil.
Experts assess that the speed and scale of the disease’s transmission are entirely unprecedented in their years of practice. Epidemiologists suggest that the primary source of the infection was a popular nightclub in the city of Canterbury, where a “super-spreader event” occurred.
Close social contact and the enclosed space facilitated the lightning-fast transmission of the bacteria. Currently, leading laboratories are operating in emergency mode, conducting full genomic sequencing of the infection. Scientists are intensively investigating whether they are dealing with a new, mutated strain of Meningitis B, which may more effectively resist existing vaccines and treatment methods.
What measures is the British government taking?
Due to the severity of the situation, a national-level protocol has been declared, involving strict control over antibiotic supplies. Nearly 5,000 students at the University of Kent are being offered urgent vaccinations, while hundreds of people who had contact with the infected individuals are undergoing preventive antibiotic therapy.
In parallel, infection cases have been recorded in five schools across the county. Although the government does not plan a mass closure of schools, there is panic among parents—private vaccine stocks in pharmacies are almost completely exhausted.
What should we know about Meningitis B? Meningitis B is the most common form of the disease in the UK; however, routine vaccination was only introduced in 2015. This means that a large portion of today’s students are not protected by this specific vaccine.
