On March 21st, the world celebrates World Down Syndrome Day. The central theme of this year’s campaign is “Together Against Loneliness” (#TogetherAgainstLoneliness). The initiative aims to draw public attention to the painful experiences that individuals with Down syndrome and their families often face.

World Down Syndrome Day was officially established by a UN resolution on November 10, 2011. Since 2012, the global community, including Georgia, has marked this date annually on March 21st.

Loneliness is not just a feeling of sadness; it causes significant harm to both mental and physical health. According to research, chronic loneliness is as damaging to the body as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. People with intellectual disabilities feel lonely seven times more often than the general population, which frequently leads to anxiety and depression.

The campaign authors emphasize that loneliness is not a choice; it is the result of stigma, discrimination, and exclusion from social life. Often, individuals with Down syndrome may be physically surrounded by others yet still feel isolated. True inclusion means more than just being in the same space—it involves active participation in shared activities, friendship, and the sense that one’s presence is valued.

To overcome loneliness, three key components are essential: genuine involvement in schools, workplaces, and the community; a friendly and safe environment protected from stigma; and meaningful relationships with family members, partners, and friends. This is not merely an act of goodwill; it is a fundamental human right protected by the UN Convention.
