Scientists at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research (WEHI) have developed an innovative rapid test for diagnosing iron deficiency. The new device requires just a single drop of finger-prick blood and 15 minutes to deliver an accurate result.
The test can be used without expensive laboratory equipment or specialized medical training, making it an ideal method for developing nations.
The key medical breakthrough of this innovation is the immediate measurement of ferritin—the primary biomarker for iron deficiency. In developing regions, doctors typically test only for hemoglobin, which fails to detect early-stage iron deficiency. The new test enables specialists to prescribe treatment to patients before the condition progresses to anemia.
According to scientists, the test will play a crucial role in maternal health, as anemia during pregnancy causes severe complications for both mother and fetus. Field testing of the device is planned in Malawi and Kenya, after which it will become available globally, transforming the lives of millions of women and children.
