CPAP Therapy Increases Testosterone Levels in Men with High-Grade Obesity

One of the main challenges for male hormonal health remains the coexistence of obesity and associated low testosterone levels. This condition is often associated with chronic fatigue, decreased libido, and a range of metabolic disorders. According to new research, the use of CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) to treat severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) can lead to a significant increase in testosterone levels. Consequently, CPAP offers the prospect of restoring hormonal balance along with solving the problem of sleep disorder.

What Is Functional Hypogonadism?

Functional hypogonadism is an endocrine condition in which the secretion of testosterone by the testes is reduced. However, the dysfunction is not directly caused by a pathology/damage to the testicle itself. This condition is particularly often observed in men with severe obesity.

The focus of the study conducted in Italy was to establish a correlation between the severity of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (a sleep disorder where breathing episodically stops during sleep) and testosterone levels in men with high-grade obesity.

Therefore, clinicians are required to also screen men with obesity and low testosterone levels for OSAS. In such cases, CPAP therapy, along with weight loss and addressing other metabolic problems, will contribute to the restoration of gonadal function.
