Digital media has a negative impact on child development: New study

Share

The use of digital media (social networks, video games) by children and adolescents is closely linked to a deterioration in health and developmental indicators. According to a new systematic review and meta-analysis published in JAMA Pediatrics, which includes 153 longitudinal studies and 18,933 participants, the frequent use of digital devices poses certain risks.

Research Findings

The study showed that digital activities have varying impacts on children’s mental and behavioral development. Social media use is most strongly associated with serious issues, such as depression, tendencies toward self-harm, behavioral disorders, and substance use, which is particularly evident in adolescents; additionally, social media is linked to lower academic performance.

Regarding video games, the results are mixed: on one hand, they increase the risk of aggression and impulsive behavior, but on the other hand, researchers found that games to some extent improve children’s attention and cognitive processes. As for general internet activity and the use of messaging apps, they are mainly associated with an increase in depressive moods.

Although technologies are good tools for learning and communication, their uncontrolled use affects children’s well-being at a population level, which sends a clear signal to parents, educators, and policymakers: greater attention is needed, along with approaches that balance the benefits of modern technology with the conditions necessary for children’s healthy development.
