Ana Tsereteli and Ana Geguchadze successfully represented Georgia at the 2025 World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) in Barcelona, one of the most significant international events in the field. As young resident doctors, this was a unique opportunity for them to present Georgia’s achievements in lung cancer research to a global audience.
At the conference, the Georgian scientists presented two studies:
- “Clinicopathological Features and Molecular Landscape of Lung Cancer in Georgia: Real-World Data from a Resource-Limited Setting.”
- “Efficacy and Survival Outcomes in Advanced NSCLC Patients with PD-L1 ≥50% Treated with Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors (ICIs): A Multicenter, Retrospective Real-World Study in Georgia.”
These studies highlight the specifics of lung cancer treatment in Georgia, focusing on existing challenges and progress. Sharing this data with the international scientific community was a proud and valuable experience for the residents.
Although the efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) as a monotherapy (without chemotherapy) for lung cancer is already established, this was the first time such a study was conducted in Georgia. This means the research proved the effectiveness of this method in local conditions, marking a significant step for Georgian medicine. Notably, patients from four different oncology centers participated in the study, making it the first multicenter study of its kind in the country.
In addition, Tsereteli and Geguchadze participated in the IASLC Grant Application Workshop, where they had the opportunity to exchange ideas with international experts, receive advice on developing competitive research projects, and discuss future collaboration possibilities.
For both residents, participating in the WCLC conference was more than a professional achievement—it was a source of knowledge, inspiration, and motivation. They returned to Georgia with valuable information, constructive feedback, and renewed determination to advance cancer research and treatment in their home country.
Representing Georgia at such a prestigious event was a great honor, and they hope this will be just the beginning of sharing Georgian scientific achievements with the world.
