Nanotechnology that clears cholesterol from blood vessels

Scientists at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) have developed innovative nanoparticles capable of detecting and treating atherosclerotic plaques within blood vessels. This technology has the potential to replace high-risk cardiovascular surgical procedures.

Atherosclerosis is a complex pathological process where cholesterol accumulation and chronic inflammation in the arterial walls stimulate one another. The research, led by Dr. Victoria Nankivell, demonstrated that these specially engineered nanoparticles target immune cells (macrophages) located within the artery walls.

The scientific core of the research involves:

  • Cholesterol Transport: The nanoparticles “pump out” harmful cholesterol from cells and transport it to the liver for further processing.

  • Inflammation Suppression: They reduce local inflammatory processes, preventing further plaque growth and potential rupture (the primary cause of heart attacks).

This technology belongs to the field of Theranostics. Beyond their therapeutic function, these nanoparticles possess unique visualization capabilities. Using advanced imaging technologies, doctors can see in real-time where inflammatory plaques are accumulating before they reach a critical threshold.

In preclinical models, the nanoparticles have shown phenomenal results. The clearing of blood vessels and reduction of inflammation occurred within just a few minutes, significantly improving patient prognosis.

“Our goal is to integrate this technology into clinical practice and, in combination with existing therapies, radically reduce the risk of heart attacks,” notes Dr. Nankivell.

Currently, the SAHMRI team is working on the clinical adaptation of the technology. If human trials are successful, it will mean that in the future, clearing arteries could be achieved not with a scalpel or stenting, but through a simple injection that releases nanorobots into the bloodstream.
