In January 2026, health authorities in India’s West Bengal state announced an outbreak of the Nipah virus. This rare but severe viral infection has attracted global attention due to its high fatality rate and potential for human-to-human transmission. Local officials reported several confirmed cases of infection, and as part of rapid containment measures, up to 100 contacts — including physicians — were placed under quarantine.
The Nipah virus is not new to the world; it has been present in South and Southeast Asia for decades. However, outbreaks have typically been sporadic and unpredictable. This year’s situation is somewhat different, as the virus has re-emerged near Kolkata, one of India’s largest urban centers. This has raised concerns among public health experts and neighboring countries, which have already begun health screenings for travelers arriving from India.
What Is the Nipah Virus?
Nipah virus (NiV) is a zoonotic virus, meaning it primarily circulates in animals and can be transmitted to humans. It belongs to the genus Henipavirus within the Paramyxoviridae family. Simply put, fruit bats (genus Pteropus) serve as the natural reservoir of the virus. These bats carry the virus without showing symptoms and shed it through saliva, urine, and feces.
From an infectious disease perspective, according to the Cleveland Clinic, humans may become infected through the following routes:

Course of the Disease
After exposure, symptoms usually develop within 4–14 days. Early signs are nonspecific and resemble influenza, making early diagnosis challenging. These include fever, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, and sore throat. In more severe cases, the disease may progress to:

Fatality Rate

This rate is significantly higher than the overall fatality rate of COVID-19, which was globally around 2–3% (and even lower in many populations due to vaccination and improved treatment).
Clinical Severity
Beyond its high fatality rate, the Nipah virus can cause rapid neurological deterioration and severe respiratory disease. Survivors may experience long-term complications, including persistent seizures or personality changes due to brain damage.
Nipah virus infection is considerably more lethal than COVID-19 but less transmissible. A virus that combines both high fatality and high transmissibility would clearly pose an extreme threat; however, Nipah virus has not naturally demonstrated this combination to date.
