The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a completely new type of revolutionary drug for cancer treatment. This marks the first-ever PROTAC (Proteolysis Targeting Chimera) therapy, known as vepdegestrant (brand name Veppanu), offering patients an innovative opportunity in the fight against breast cancer.
Developed through a collaboration between Arvinas and Pfizer, the new medication is intended for adult patients. It is specifically used for advanced or metastatic forms of breast cancer driven by estrogen receptor signaling. The drug is administered in an oral (pill) form, requiring patients to take it only once a day.
While most traditional medications simply block disease-causing proteins, PROTAC technology operates in an entirely different way. This method harnesses the cell’s natural mechanisms to physically break down and eliminate the harmful proteins responsible for tumor growth. This unique approach makes the new therapy one of the most promising directions in modern oncology.
The visionary behind this revolutionary technology is Craig Crews, a chemist and professor at Yale University. He began his work on protein degradation 25 years ago. A decade ago, he founded the biotechnology company Arvinas to transform laboratory research into a real, accessible medication for patients.
Interestingly, the scientist’s initial research aimed to block protein degradation, which led to the creation of another approved drug for blood cancer. Over time, however, he became interested in the opposite approach—creating a mechanism that would send “problematic proteins” directly into the cell’s natural disposal system. This shift in focus ultimately led to the development of PROTAC technology.
The official approval of the first PROTAC therapy signals the beginning of a new era in pharmacology. This precedent paves the way for using the technology not only against various forms of cancer but also against complex conditions such as neurodegenerative diseases and dementia.
Currently, dozens of pharmaceutical companies worldwide are working on developing medications based on similar principles. The success of this new drug reaffirms the profound importance of fundamental scientific research, which, decades later, can evolve into a real chance to save millions of lives.
