A new stage in the regulation of nursing and midwifery activities has begun in Georgia. A decree has come into effect, mandating the creation of a special state registry and a compulsory authorization process.

A unified state registry has already been established to consolidate data on medical personnel, which is intended to enhance the transparency and efficiency of the system. This database will provide detailed information regarding the issuance and validity periods of state certificates. The registry also includes data on the status of registration certificates, including their suspension, renewal, cancellation, or the issuance of duplicates.

The process involves strict monitoring of the right to professional practice. As part of the reform, the rules for maintaining the registry and the new regulations officially entered into force on January 26, 2026.

A transitional period has been established for the full implementation of the system. Starting July 1, 2027, practicing as a nurse or midwife without a corresponding state certificate or registration certificate will be prohibited by law.

According to the explanatory notes, this change serves to increase the transparency of the nursing system. The existence of a unified database ensures quality control and patient safety.
