“Vaccines work for all generations” — World Immunization Week 2026 has begun

In May 2012, the World Health Assembly established a global public health initiative, designating the last week of April each year as World Immunization Week. The primary mission of the campaign is to raise public awareness about the importance of vaccination and to strengthen its role in the fight against vaccine-preventable diseases.

The 2026 campaign launched on April 24 and will continue until April 30. This year’s theme is “Vaccines Work for All Generations.” This message reinforces the critical importance of immunization for all age groups and its fundamental role in protecting individual and public health, as well as disease prevention.

A Legacy of Lifesaving Impact

For over two centuries, immunization has served as a steadfast guarantee for the health of future generations. According to WHO statistics, vaccination has saved more than 150 million lives over the last 50 years, including 101 million infants. During this period, the world achieved the total eradication of smallpox and the elimination of polio in most regions. Furthermore, the incidence and mortality associated with measles, diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus have significantly decreased. As of 2026, immunization programs globally save an average of 6 children’s lives every minute.

Significant progress has also been recorded in controlling specific infectious diseases:

  • Hepatitis B: Widespread vaccination has reduced the global prevalence of the infection among children under five to below 1%.

  • Hib: Immunization programs for Haemophilus influenzae type b have minimized the spread of severe meningitis and pneumonia.

  • Pneumococcus & Rotavirus: These vaccines have substantially reduced pediatric hospitalization and lethality, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

  • Global Integration: Currently, the pneumococcal vaccine is integrated into the national immunization schedules of approximately 160 countries; the rotavirus vaccine is available in 131 countries; and Hepatitis B immunization is included in nearly all national programs (approximately 190 countries as of 2024 WHO data).

Furthermore, the latest malaria vaccines, RTS,S/AS01 and R21/Matrix-M, are being progressively integrated into routine schedules in sub-Saharan Africa. By the beginning of 2026, approximately 25 countries had already implemented these vaccines, marking a major step forward in reducing the malaria burden.

Persistent Challenges and the “Zero-Dose” Gap

Despite colossal progress, significant challenges remain in the global immunization system. Of particular concern is the high proportion of “zero-dose” children, an indicator of systemic inequality in access to services. According to UNICEF (2023), 14.5 million children lack access to routine immunization entirely, and more than 20 million have not completed their vaccination courses.

  • DTP3 Coverage: Currently stands at approximately 84%, falling short of the ≥90% threshold required for herd immunity.

  • Measles: The situation is even more critical, with first-dose coverage at 83% and second-dose coverage at approximately 74%—significantly lower than the necessary 95% target. This trend contributes to rising measles outbreaks globally.

The situation is further exacerbated by the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Between 2019 and 2021, approximately 67 million children missed one or more routine vaccinations, making the full recovery of immunization rates a major ongoing challenge.

Systemic Barriers to Progress

These challenges are driven by three interconnected factors:

  1. Socio-economic and Geographic Inequality: Non-immunized populations are largely concentrated in low-income countries and conflict zones with limited healthcare infrastructure.

  2. Vaccine Skepticism: Identified by the WHO as a major threat to public health. The spread of misinformation and the erosion of trust in healthcare institutions threaten decades of epidemiological stability.

  3. Logistical Barriers: Issues such as “cold chain” failures hinder the timely delivery of vaccines in resource-limited regions.

Addressing these gaps requires more than just physical access to vaccines; it demands a multifaceted strengthening of health systems, including infrastructure development, equitable access, effective logistics, the bolstering of public trust, and the implementation of evidence-based policies.

Conclusion

Regardless of existing barriers, vaccination remains one of the most effective and economically justified public health interventions. It provides both individual and collective protection against more than 20 vaccine-preventable and life-threatening diseases. By reducing hospitalizations and complications, vaccination saves healthcare costs and remains a cornerstone of global economic and social well-being.
