Today, February 4, 2026, the world marks World Cancer Day. The history of this day dates back to 2000, when it was officially established at the “World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium” held in Paris.
The “Charter of Paris,” adopted at this summit, aimed to promote scientific research, improve patient care, and mobilize the global community. Since then, under the auspices of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), this day has been observed annually to ensure that the fight against cancer remains a priority on the global health agenda.
The main message of this year’s observance is “United by Unique.” This is part of a three-year campaign (2025–2027) that focuses on patient-centered care. The primary goal of the campaign is to emphasize that every patient’s case is unique and requires an individualized approach, utilizing modern technologies and innovative methods.
On this day, the world unites to remind governments and institutions of the critical necessity of early diagnosis. Research confirms that the earlier a tumor is diagnosed, the higher the chances of full recovery and the less invasive the treatment process.
At the same time, universal access to screening remains a paramount challenge. Modern, high-tech examinations must be accessible to everyone, regardless of their social or economic status, in order to eliminate inequities in healthcare services.
Furthermore, international efforts must continuously be directed toward the implementation of innovative treatment methods. The latest therapeutic achievements, such as immunotherapy and personalized medicine, should become global standards to make the fight against cancer more effective and less traumatic for patients.
