A robotic method for hip endoprosthetics has been introduced in Poland

Poland has become the third country in the European Union where a hip joint endoprosthesis surgery was performed using a robotic arm. The high-tech method was utilized at the Brodno Hospital in Mazovia, Warsaw. This is the latest technology that was previously used in only two other European countries.

During a robotic endoprosthesis surgery, the surgeon attaches a special device to the robotic arm. Aided by Artificial Intelligence (AI), the system calculates the optimal positioning for the hip implant and performs diagnostic measurements in real-time. The robotic arm assists the surgeon with precise positioning during implant placement.

This innovative technology eliminates the need for separate MRI or CT scans, reduces the risk of complications, and improves joint mobility, allowing patients to return to sports and other physical activities in the future.

Professor Skowronek, who participated in this significant medical achievement, states that robotic technologies previously used only for knee surgeries are now also being utilized in hip joint operations, marking a new stage in the development of orthopedics.

Hip endoprosthetics is one of the most frequently performed surgeries. Using the robotic arm allows for:

  • Precise implant placement.
  • Minimizing leg length discrepancy.
  • Achieving maximum range of motion.
  • Reducing the risk of dislocation.

According to Professor Skowronek, this surgery is being performed on younger patients more and more often. He also noted that the number of such surgeries in Europe is expected to double by 2050.

Besides Poland, this technology has currently only been used in the EU by Belgium and Slovakia.

Approximately 2,000 surgical procedures are performed annually at the Brodno Hospital in Mazovia, including over 1,000 hip joint endoprosthesis surgeries using the minimally invasive MIS DAA (Direct Anterior Approach) method, which is one of the most advanced techniques in Poland.
