Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), formerly known as “Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease,” has become one of the fastest-growing pathologies worldwide. According to a new study published in the journal Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology, the number of people living with this diagnosis is projected to reach 1.8 billion by 2050.
Current data shows that one in six people globally (1.3 billion individuals) is already affected by MASLD, representing a 143% increase over the last three decades. Scientists attribute this trend to lifestyle changes, specifically the rise in obesity and blood sugar levels.
Key Highlights of the Study
The research identified leading factors in the development of the disease, including high blood sugar, high Body Mass Index (BMI), and smoking. These findings further emphasize the close link between Type 2 diabetes and obesity.
An interesting trend emerged across different age groups. Although the disease is most prevalent among individuals aged 80–84, the total number of patients is dominated by younger generations. Specifically, the largest group of affected individuals among men is in the 35–39 age range, while for women, it is between 55–59 years.
Regionally, particularly high rates of the disease are recorded in North Africa and the Middle East. However, the situation is also worsening significantly in the West. For instance, the prevalence rate in the UK has increased by a third since 1990, the highest growth rate among Western European countries.
Prevention and Risks
The insidious nature of MASLD lies in the fact that it often progresses without symptoms. Many patients live with this diagnosis without suspicion until the disease is discovered during examinations for other reasons. Symptoms such as severe fatigue or discomfort in the upper right abdomen may only appear at later stages.
The study’s authors note that despite the rise in cases, modern treatment methods allow patients to lead longer, higher-quality lives. Nevertheless, growing statistics indicate that millions of people face the risk of developing liver cirrhosis or cancer in the future.
Scientists conclude that the fight against MASLD must become a global healthcare priority. This primarily involves lifestyle modifications and raising public awareness.
