One of the most interesting aspects of working as a psychotherapist is the opportunity to see how we become the cause of our own problems. The difficulties we face are often the result of self-sabotage, and dealing with them requires fighting against our own desires and resisting every impulse. Of course, this is easier said than done. Losing weight, getting out of debt, finding a good job, or maintaining a happy relationship—all of these things require delaying immediate gratification to achieve a long-term goal.
This ability to delay gratification has been a useful tactic for millennia. But a reasonable question arises: Why do we have to swim against the current in modern life? Why do we so often encounter problems when we follow our instincts?
A core idea of evolutionary psychology is the “evolutionary mismatch.” Simply put, humans evolved in an environment that is vastly different from the one we inhabit today. As a result, our brains, bodies, and instincts are poorly suited for the modern environment.
How significant is this? Isn’t the defining feature of human nature its ability to adapt to changing circumstances? The answer is both yes and no. Yes, we have an amazing capacity to tackle new problems, collaborate to find solutions, and create technologies to implement them. At the same time, anthropologists estimate that human genetics and anatomy have remained virtually unchanged for about 100,000 years. Back then, we lived in small tribes of nomadic hunter-gatherers; agriculture only developed 10,000 years ago, and civilizations, 5,000 years ago.
The modern environment, for all but the smallest fraction of our history, is not what humans were evolutionarily designed for. Genetic adaptations, which take tens of thousands of years, cannot keep pace with the speed of living in cities, let alone the technological and cultural shifts that undergo dramatic transformations within a single generation. This very mismatch is the root cause of many modern problems.
Perhaps the most visible impact is on our waistlines. The instinct to consume large quantities of salty, fatty, and sugary foods helped humans survive for most of history when the next meal was never guaranteed. Now we live in a world where calories are cheap and where scientists dedicate their entire careers to making food “hyper-palatable”—that is, far more appealing than anything found in nature. These artificial products interfere with the body’s ability to regulate appetite, making it difficult to stop at just one potato chip or cookie. Obesity, once rare, now surpasses malnutrition as the leading nutrition-related public health problem in many parts of the world.
The dating (and mating) sphere has also changed beyond recognition. The strong drive to find a suitable sexual partner was essential when tribes of around 150 people were fighting for survival in a harsh world. But at that time, the pool of potential partners was small. Now we have devices that connect us with thousands of people. As a result, the process often becomes prolonged and demoralizing—a phase of life characterized by choice paralysis, hurtful behaviors like “ghosting,” and the constant anxiety that our true soulmate is just one swipe away.
The rising rates of depression and other mental health issues can also be viewed through the lens of evolutionary mismatch. Hunter-gatherer life involved constant companionship, physical labor (like finding food or building shelter), and communities rich with tradition, rituals, and spiritual meaning. Modern technology makes all of this optional instead of mandatory. As a result, many of us live detached from others, without meaningful work and purpose. When viewed in this context, a low mood isn’t a sign of a malfunctioning brain, but a signal that we may be missing essential aspects of the human experience.
To cope with these deficiencies, some of us turn to technology. Just as “hyper-palatable” foods exploit our ancient appetites, AI tools like ChatGPT and Replika have begun to exploit our deep-seated longing for meaning, social connections, and romantic bonds. AI companies themselves are surprised by how emotionally attached people become to their products. It has also been reported that chatbots can feed the delusions and paranoid thoughts of people prone to psychosis.
This is not to say that the right path for humanity is to try to go back to a remote past. Hunter-gatherers did not live in a utopian harmony. Instead, I propose that the true explanation for our current physical and mental difficulties is that the world has evolved in a way that our biology has not been able to keep up with. If we analyze our own lives without taking this mismatch into account and demand that we function like highly efficient machines, it will lead to deep self-criticism and resentment. Today, the frustration of being unable to lose weight, a meaningless job, and the loneliness of modern cities can be perceived as individual failures.
However, if we understand what we are evolutionarily designed for, we can look at our problems more clearly and with more empathy. This will lead us toward better and more informed decisions. Instead of berating ourselves for not being able to control our impulses, we can see it through the lens of evolutionary mismatch and start thinking about useful solutions. Such solutions might be simple, like removing unhealthy food from the house, deleting social media apps, or limiting screen time.
More complex solutions to the problem require us to step back and see the bigger picture. Community, collective problem-solving, and a life of meaning are and will remain essential components for a fulfilling life, regardless of what technology we invent or what cultural trends emerge. Thinking about how to make these an integral part of our lives, rather than optional add-ons, is a potentially life-changing exercise. And all of this is happening to us not because something is wrong with us, but because we find ourselves in strange times.
