Scientists uncover a significant new pattern in Alzheimer’s disease prevention. According to a research team from Loma Linda University, regular egg consumption among individuals over the age of 65 substantially reduces the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Specifically, incorporating at least one egg into the diet five days a week lowers the likelihood of the disease by 27%.
The study, published in the Journal of Nutrition, analyzed data from nearly 40,000 subjects over a period of more than 15 years. Researchers identified a clear trend: the risk of Alzheimer’s decreases in proportion to the frequency of egg consumption.
According to the data, compared to those who do not consume eggs at all, eating 1 to 3 eggs per month reduces the risk by 17%. Consuming 2 to 4 eggs per week lowers the risk by 20%, while eating 5 or more eggs per week brings that figure up to 27%. Notably, the researchers accounted for both direct egg consumption and “hidden” egg intake found in various processed products and baked goods.
The study’s authors state that eggs are a unique source of nutrients critical for brain health. They contain choline, which plays a vital role in memory and synaptic function, as well as lutein and zeaxanthin—specific carotenoids that accumulate in brain tissue, improve cognitive performance, and significantly reduce oxidative stress. Furthermore, egg yolks are particularly rich in phospholipids and omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for the proper functioning of neurotransmitter receptors.
Despite the positive findings, scientists remind the public that egg consumption should only be part of an overall balanced diet. For brain health and Alzheimer’s prevention, adhering to a comprehensive healthy eating model is crucial, rather than relying solely on one specific product.
