Possible Link Between Infant Mortality and Artificial Feeding Products Under Investigation in France

Information is spreading in France regarding the potentially fatal contamination of infant formula. Health authorities are linking the deaths of two infants to products allegedly contaminated with toxins. In the city of Pessac, one of the newborns consumed Guigoz powder manufactured by Nestlé, prompting investigators to actively search for a connection between the product and the tragic incident.

Three major companies are initiating product recalls from the market. Nestlé, Lactalis, and Danone have decided to remove batches from sale where the suspected cause of contamination is cereulide—a toxin that causes nausea and vomiting.

Nestlé has already recalled Guigoz powder from the French market, although the Swiss company does not yet acknowledge a link to the fatal cases. The international dairy producer Lactalis has removed products from markets in 18 countries, while Danone has completely suspended a batch intended for Singapore as a safety precaution. Manufacturers state that all these measures serve purely preventive purposes.

The death of the infant in Pessac is being investigated by the Bordeaux Prosecutor’s Office. Details of a second case that occurred in Angers are not being made public at this stage. The French Ministry of Health emphasizes that a causal link between the product and the lethal outcome has not yet been established.

The French Ministry of Agriculture has already identified the potential source of the hazard. An oil rich in arachidonic acid (ARA), received from a Chinese supplier and used in infant formula to support brain development, is named as the likely cause. The final forensic conclusion will be known in 10 days.

While breast milk remains the safest choice for infants, artificial feeding is a necessity for many families. Experts urge parents to exercise caution and advise them to verify product batch codes. At this stage, France is leading the investigation, and the international community is closely monitoring the ongoing process.
