Tradition or Biological Wisdom?

For centuries, people have brought fir or pine trees into their homes to create a festive mood. However, modern science has begun to investigate whether this is merely an aesthetic tradition or if it contains a deeper biological pattern. According to psychosomatic medicine expert Thomas Loew, “rituals serve both spiritual and physical needs simultaneously.” Based on this hypothesis, researchers compared the effectiveness of two symbolic actions: can a 5-minute inhalation of pine scent cause the same increase in nitric oxide (NO) as humming Christmas carols?

To answer this question, a team at the University Hospital Regensburg in Germany, led by Thomas Loew, conducted a unique experiment. Within a clinical study, they tested how quintessential Christmas attributes—the aroma of a live coniferous tree and melodic humming—affect immune status.

The study examined changes in the concentration of nitric oxide (NO) in the nasal cavity—a substance that represents a key mechanism of the body’s antiviral defense. These results are of fundamental importance because NO mobilizes the immune response against pathogens such as SARS-CoV-2; additionally, it improves microcirculation and reduces the risk of seasonal winter diseases.

Essential Oils: The essential oils of coniferous plants are bioactive agents that rapidly activate the defense mechanisms of the nasal mucosa and stimulate the synthesis of endogenous nitric oxide.

Melodic Humming: A similar effect characterizes melodic humming—acoustic vibration sharply enhances NO expression in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.

Mechanism of Action: Nitric oxide fights viral invasion by activating the iNOS (inducible nitric oxide synthase)enzyme. This mechanism became particularly critical during the COVID-19 pandemic, as NO has a direct ability to limit viral replication and prevent its entry into host cells.

A randomized crossover study involved 16 healthy healthcare volunteers. Initially, the baseline concentration of Fractional Exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO) and subjective levels of relaxation were determined using a NIOX VEROdevice.

Subsequently, participants performed two types of interventions in a randomized order: a 5-minute inhalation of coniferous aroma; Humming Christmas melodies to stimulate nasal vibration.

Following a short break, the groups switched roles according to the crossover methodology, allowing each subject to test both stimulations. FeNO was monitored immediately after each procedure to evaluate the dynamics of nitric oxide expression.

Study Results

The intervention revealed interesting indicators regarding nitric oxide dynamics:

Coniferous Aroma: An increase in NO concentration was recorded in 44% of participants, while 25% remained stable, and 31% showed a slight decrease.

Humming Effect: The effect was similar—an increase in expression was revealed in 43%, 19% remained unchanged, and 38% decreased.

The primary finding of the study is that in 69% of participants, nitric oxide levels improved with the use of at least one method. Positive dynamics were entirely absent in only 25% of subjects, whom Professor Thomas Loew jokingly referred to as “Christmas Grinches.”

While the overall statistical significance (p-value) was high, individual reactions proved to be clinically noteworthy. A particularly sharp increase was recorded in individuals who had a low baseline NO level at the start.

The winter period presents a complex challenge to the body: vitamin deficiencies, increased viral activity, and seasonal emotional imbalance directly impact overall health. However, Thomas Loew concludes that pine scent or humming activates the immune response in more than 40% of people, and their combination increases this figure to nearly 70%. “There is biological wisdom in rituals,” he notes. This approach may eventually serve as scientific justification for therapeutic practices such as hydrotherapy, saunas, or “forest bathing” (Shinrin-yoku), all of which are based on mobilizing the body’s natural strengths.
