Fifty-eight-year-old Tracy Tomlinson has become the first patient in the world to receive a brand-new experimental therapy for advanced ovarian cancer. The therapy, named ZI-MA4-1, was administered to her at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester. This innovative clinical trial, which simultaneously evaluates treatment effectiveness across several types of cancer—including lung as well as head and neck cancers—opens up new possibilities for patients left with virtually no other alternatives for survival.
The new therapy combines two of the most powerful methods for fighting cancer. First, it uses the body’s natural killer cells, which are specialized in destroying abnormal formations. In addition, the T-cell receptors on these cells are engineered specifically to recognize and attack tumors that produce the Mage-A4 protein, which specialists consider an ideal target for destroying cancer cells.
Unlike other personalized treatment methods, ZI-MA4-1 is an off-the-shelf therapy that utilizes donor immune cells. Instead of manufacturing the treatment individually for each patient, it is pre-created from donor cells, allowing hundreds of doses to be produced from a single manufacturing batch. Doctors explain that this approach will render cellular therapy much more accessible, faster, and cheaper—a factor of vital importance for people with aggressive forms of cancer.
Tracy Tomlinson was diagnosed with the disease in 2020 and has since undergone numerous surgical procedures and chemotherapy courses. Although the disease was beaten twice, the tumor kept returning and spreading throughout the body as soon as treatment ceased. The inclusion of this drug—developed by the Norwegian company Zelluna—into clinical trials represents a major milestone in bringing years of laboratory research into clinical practice, and experts anticipate it will significantly alter the standards of cancer management.
