Power outages worsen health conditions and increase the risk of hospitalization: New study

A power outage is not merely a household inconvenience — studies show that power supply disruptions sharply increase the risk of numerous health problems. These hazards include gastrointestinal diseases and cardiovascular complications, as well as physical injuries and road traffic accidents.

Experts explain that hospitalization rates rise during power outages due to cardiovascular and respiratory issues, as well as carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, which is often caused by the improper use of generators. Furthermore, the risk of burns and various injuries in children increases significantly, as people resort to candles and gas stoves for alternative lighting and heating.

These hypotheses and observations are supported by recent large-scale statistical studies. According to a paper published in the scientific journal PLOS Medicine, which analyzed data from 23 million patients aged 65 and older, power outages lasting longer than 8 hours are directly linked to a sharp rise in emergency hospitalizations among the elderly. The study revealed that the risk of hospitalization due to respiratory diseases peaks on the day of the power outage itself, while hospitalizations for cardiovascular pathologies increase the following day. Scientists estimate that in the US alone, power outages caused more than 4,200 additional emergency hospitalizations among people over 65 in a single year.

In addition, power outages negatively impact road safety. As traffic lights and street lighting shut down, driver behavior becomes more unpredictable in high-stress conditions, leading to an increased number of accidents.

When a power supply disruption lasts for several days, the prevalence of gastrointestinal infections spikes dramatically. This is not caused solely by food spoiling in refrigerators — interrupted power supply can also disrupt water supply systems and water treatment facilities.

Specialists note that power outages often coincide with extreme weather and natural disasters (such as wildfires or storms), which further compounds the risks. This double blow, driven by climate change and vulnerable power grids, renders the situation far more critical.

Although this issue affects everyone, the most vulnerable groups include young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and patients who rely on electricity-dependent medical equipment (such as oxygen concentrators and dialysis machines).

Crisis management experts emphasize that reducing risks in such conditions requires careful advance planning, enhancing the reliability of power grids, and taking preventive measures — including providing backup power sources for medical equipment.
