Maintaining balance while standing and walking seems simple at first glance—until it becomes a problem. Difficulty walking due to stroke, Parkinson’s disease, or simply age is one of the main reasons for restricted mobility. Individuals with these issues require accurate and continuous monitoring to assess their condition.
However, researchers at Georgia Tech may have found a new solution. They have created an electronic device that fits into any shoe and monitors foot pressure—a key indicator of balance.
The device, which consists of more than 170 thin and flexible sensors, gathers detailed data on foot pressure, potentially making it possible to predict the risk of falling.
Unlike other similar technologies, the Georgia Tech device emphasizes accessibility and mass production. Led by Professor W. Hong Yeo, the researchers used a screen-printing method—a low-cost production process standard in the industry—to create the sensors.
The device is thin enough to maintain comfort and is equipped with Bluetooth for wireless data transmission. This high-tech insole connects to a smartphone and can integrate with health monitoring applications. The device’s design supports both clinical and consumer use, including accurate gait assessment for stroke and Parkinson’s patients, and movement analysis for athletes.
This technology creates the foundation for developing Machine Learning algorithms that will be able to predict the risk of falling. Moreover, the device’s light weight and low cost (under $100) ensure its accessibility to a wide audience.
Thanks to its wireless, affordable design and the potential for real-time feedback, the Georgia Tech “smart insole” is poised to revolutionize the methods used to monitor and manage gait disorders, both in clinical settings and daily life.
